Improvements to a Department of Veterans Affairs facility
The architectural firm Lee, Burkhart, Liu, Inc. responded to the challenge of revitalizing the VA Healthcare Center in Long Beach, CA. The result was a design which would weave together a new structure with the diverse, existing buildings on the campus. A curved roof extends beyond the lobby to serve as an awning above the main entrance. Walkways are covered with a metal structure which mimics the angle and diagonal columns of the main entrance.
BEGA small scale floodlights are mounted to the underside of the metal structure to illuminate the path of the covered walkway. The floodlight mounting canopy, with 85° vertical and 350° horizontal rotation, allows for the luminaires to be mounted to the the side of the metal beam and easily aimed to create rhythmic pools of light below.
The underside of the covered walkways are illuminated with forward throwing floodlights mounted to the diagonal columns. Stainless steel, adjustable in-grade luminaires wash the concrete facade of the main entrance with warm light.
The end result is a stunning building which received an AIA Citation Award, a Los Angeles Business Council Award of Excellence, and a Modern Healthcare Award of Excellence for Healthcare Facilities Design.
