St. George Ferry Terminal
Staten Island, NY
BEGA Lights New York Landmark
Dedicated on May 20th, 2005, this revitalized 55-year-old ferry terminal at St. George on Staten Island creates a state-of-the-art gateway not only for local commuters, but for the more than one million tourists who pass this way each year. Home to the Staten Island Ferry, the $132 million project creates a lifeline between Staten Island and Manhattan.
BEGA floodlights, steplights, and wall mounted fixtures were utilized to dramatically enhance the terminal, which features floor-to-ceiling glass for panoramic views of the harbor and incoming ferries. The new terminal's steel and glass design also provides natural lighting and views of the Manhattan skyline. This ADA compliant facility also features a heated and air conditioned waiting room, as well as 20,000 square feet of newly constructed retail space.
A Photovoltaic louver system will save 25% of the energy needed to operate the facility. Other "green" features of the facility include an 18,000-square-foot living roof which will support local vegetation. Instead of a storm water drainage system, run-off will be collected in a cistern and used to irrigate the soil of this roof-top garden.
The new terminal offers visitors a scenic walkway and access to the many cultural attractions Staten Island has to offer. |
