BEGA Lights Link Liberty for All!
Falls Park in Greenville, South Carolina, is used nearly every hour every day. This popular park divides two main portions of downtown Greenville, so it became evident that a bridge linking the two would be a great idea for the community.
Since the bridge would still operate as a pedestrian link after dark, it was clear from the start a lighting professional would be needed to develop a lighting concept sensitive to the locale as well as being unique to the new bridge. Enter Derek Porter, principal of the lighting design firm Derek Porter Studio.
Porter realized the value of BEGA luminaires in preserving the quality and aesthetics of the bridge as a manmade structure, its function as a crossing for people of all ages, and the way in which it interacts with both the urban and natural environments.
To further insure the perception of personal security at night while still managing to enhance the transition from an urban to a natural environment, Porter utilized BEGA’s 8329MH luminaires as well as BEGA’s 8337MH luminaires (each with concentric ring louvers to aid in glare control). The discreet nature of the lighting design does not impose itself on the architectural structure while visually enhancing the beautifully engineered bridge as the focal point.
Nominated for the 24th IALD International Lighting Design Awards for its aesthetic quality and technical performance, it received an Award of Merit in the Monuments and Public Spaces category. |
